Erongo Regional Governor Neville Andre has called on small-scale mining companies to improve the living and working conditions of employees.

Governor Neville Andre and stakeholders paid a surprise visit to workers at a small mining site about 30 kilometers from Arandis.

The governor was not happy with the living conditions of the workers, who are accommodated in corrugated iron shacks.

The ablution facilities leave much to be desired.

The Erongo Governor says there are many small-scale mining operations in the region taking place and authorities need to know where they are taking place and what they are doing because they are also mistreating employees. He also stressed the importance of fostering a healthy relationship between employers and employees going forward.

The General Secretary of the Metal and Allied Workers Union Justina Jonas says that in terms of the living conditions there is an urgent need for the union to come back and meet management so that they can improve the infrastructure which is currently there. She further said that the infrastructure is not conducive for the workers at this present time and needs to be improved as soon as possible.

The governor indicated that stakeholders, who include inspectors and union representatives will be paying surprise visits to various mining sites in the region.

He says the intent is not to punish any company but just to ensure the laws are adhered to.
