President Hage Geingob says Cabinet will be discussing the matter of the possible revival of Air Namibia.

This follows a proposal by Ethiopian Airlines to assist the government should it consider bringing back Air Namibia to the skies.

The Board and Management of Ethiopian Airlines, led by Chairman Girma Wake, held a meeting with President Geingob and ministers on the margins of the AU Summit in Addis Ababa.

President Geingob says once the matter is formally discussed in Cabinet, the government may also look into the possibility of a joint venture with other airlines, including Ethiopian Airlines.

Air Namibia was liquidated in 2021 after years of incurring losses running into billions and mismanagement.

Ethiopian Airlines Chairman Wake says the company is also interested in being a designated carrier for Namibia.

The company has a similar agreement with the Malawian government, which it says is in accordance with the African Union’s Single African Air Transport Market.

The Single African Air Transport Market aims to allow significant freedom of air transport and ultimately create a single market for air transport on the continent in line with AU's Agenda 2063.
