DIPPENAAR WINS 2017 TOTAL TARA RALLY

KAVII VEZEMBURUKA Wildro Dippenaar and his navigator Riaan van der Westhuizen left dust in the eyes of the other participating drivers to win the 2017 Total Tara Rally that ended in Windhoek on Saturday. The two-day rally event which started and ended at the Tony Rust track on the outskirts of Windhoek also took the drivers to stages as far as Aris and Omeya on the road to Rehoboth. It was dust all over in the rocky roads that the drivers had to aquaint themselves with. In the end, the event was dominated by Wildro Dippenaar and his long-time navigator Riaan van der Westhuizen in their Toyota Auris. They previously won the 2011 edition of the race as they rounded up their feat in a champaigne spraying celebration on the track. “I am happy with this win, I think we had a good start on day one and that paved the way for us in the end. We fought hard against the rocky roads throughout but in the end here we are, " said a visibly delighted Dippenaar. Jaco Redelinghuys and Dries Booysen, who represented Gobabis in high esteem, lost the title by a minute as they came second in their Toyota. It was however enough to present them with a podium place in the end, while Allan Martin and Derek Jacobs joined them to complete the first three podium places - courtesy of their good driving skills and tactical approach in their Volkswagen Polo S2000. Despite few mechanical problems experienced by some drivers, the event proved to be injury-free in the end as Chairman of the Windhoek Motor Club, Richard Slamet told NBC Sport. “It was a good event, we received support from other clubs registered with the Namibia Motorsport Federation and we saw some good drving skills throughout, so it turned to be something to remember.” Altogether, 13 drivers and their navigators participated in the race.
