Eengedjo  Haudano clinch Far North Championship

The Eengedjo Senior Secondary School (SSS) from the Ohangwena Region and Haudano SSS from Omusati are the champions of the 2016 Old Mutual Far North Championships that ended here on Saturday. The boys from Eengedjo are the champions in football and the Haudano girls winners in the netball contest. Introduced in 2004, the Old Mutual Far North Tournament comprise football and netball competitions between various schools in the northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto. The 2016 competition started at regional level a few months ago and finished recently, before moving to the inter-regions final play-offs at the Oshakati Independence Stadium on Saturday. Eengedjo defeated their counterparts from Ruacana High School in the Omusati Region 5-4 on penalties, after ending with a 3-all draw in extra time. In the semi-final, Eengedjo defeated Nehale SSS from Oshikoto Region 3-2, and Ruacana defeated Oshana Region-based Gabriel Taapopi SSS 5-4 on penalties, following their 1-1 stalemate. Gabriel Taapopi took the third prize for beating Nehale 3-2 in the third position play-off. In the netball category, Haudano handed the Uukule SSS from Oshikoto Region a 24-22 defeat in their final encounter. Haudano reached the final after beating Gabriel Taapopi, also 24-22, in the semi-final, while Uukule defeated Onanghulo Combined School (CS) from Ohangwena Region 25-21 to reach the final of this category. The third prize in the netball category went to Gabriel Taapopi for beating Onanghulo 29-15 in their third position play-off. The champions in both football and netball received N.dollars 5 000 each, on top of a N.dollars 3 000 regional winner prize, floating trophy, photocopy machine, gold medals, Old mutual-branded T-shirts and a variety of sports equipment. Runners-up received N.dollars 3 000, a computer set, silver medals and sport equipment, while the third prize includes N.dollars 2 000, bronze medals, fax machine and sport equipment. The fourth-ending team walked away with N.dollars 1 000 plus the football or netball equipment used during the finals. Primary, combined and secondary schools from across northern Namibia participated. The Old Mutual Namibia Insurance Company, in partnership with other companies such as Solution Worx, OTB Sports and Waltons Stationary, this year sponsored the championship for the 13th consecutive year to the tune of N.dollars 450 000.
