Illegal hosting of motor sport evens will be a thing of the past

The illegal hosting of spins, drifting or any other, un-sanctioned motor competition will soon be a thing of the past, says the president of the Motor Sport Federation, Dan Tjongarero. Motor Sports is gaining popularity among Namibians and the new executive Committee of the Namibia Motor Sports Federation as custodians of the sport wants to insure that it is managed properly. Although no major accidents have been recorded so far, safety has been a major concern at some of the motor sport events especially spinning and drug races where vehicles spin in the middle of a crowd at high speed. The committee - since taking office in May - has already implemented several adjustments as far as to streamlining of activities of the federation is concerned. Challenges include: obtaining funds to roll out their programmes and finding office space, while the illegal hosting of motor sports events is the biggest issue. Motor sports president Dan Tjongarero says these events are not only unlawful, but a safety risks for all adding them. "If it’s not a sanctioned event and we don’t have a say about it, than obviously people will go ahead and do what they want. It is a risk because someone could lose a vehicle and go into a crowd and someone could lose a life. The first thing they will say is what the federation does. It’s motor sports and that is the things we want to curb" he added Tjongerero urged authorities to assist the federation in curbing illegal events by requesting individuals or organisations permits. "The safety is a big concern, because when one has a sanctioned event, there is a process where one has to pay a permit for where you got the permit and with that permit, you get the necessary insurance and you get the necessary officials" said Tjongerero Drags, Vasbyt, Rallies, Spanning, Ovals Karting, Bikes and Drifting which are at an exhibition stage, also fall under the mandate of the Namibia Motor Sports Federation.
