BY: Katrina Gowases The trial proceedings for Namibian boxer Jonas Junius Jonas have not yet started as Brazilian courts are still on recess until Monday. Junius Jonas remains in Brazil with his coach Jacob “Mistake” Gariseb and team manager Mathias Nguluka, who were also his roommates. The two boxing officials are witnesses in Jonas’case and expected to testify in court next week. The Namibian boxer will go on trial for his alleged attempted sexual assault of a Brazilian house maid at the Athletes Village in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic games, which ended on Sunday. The complainant claimed in her statement that the boxer offered her money in exchange for sex, and attempted to kiss her before she fled the scene to report the incident to the police. Junius ,however, excised his right to remain silent and is currently in the care on the Namibian Embassy in Brazil, after a successful application of habeus corpus. This means that the application was to secure his physical freedom in the custody of a responsible person or an entity, which in this case is the Namibian Embassy. A Brazilian Legal Act of 1992 states the definition of attempted rape or rape and sexual harassment are of one and the same crime. The penalty, if convicted, is a jail term of between six to ten years.
