By Katrina Gowases The chef de Mission of team Namibia at the Rio Olympics, Jesse Schikerling, has called on Namibians who wish to assist the NNOC financially towards Junius Jonas’ case to contact its offices in Windhoek. Junius Jonas was arrested last Sunday for alleged attempt of sexual assault of an Olympic village housekeeper. There was no actual bail application for the young boxer but, it was an application habeus corpus, meaning an application to secure physical freedom in the custody of a responsible person or an entity. This application allowed the 22-year-old to fight last night. Despite all difficulties, Jonas stepped in the ring and put up a good performance against Hassan Amzile of France. He lost the fight on points by a close margin of 28-29, 28-29, 28-29. The boxer is currently in the care on the Namibian High Commission in Brazil. The NNOC has acquired the services of a top lawyer in Brazil to represent the Namibian boxer, an exercise which is anticipated to be very costly. Jonas’case has received international attention, with sport lovers around the world watching the case closely.
