Khomas Governor to crown champion

Khomas Regional Governor Laura McLeod Katjirua will present the belt to the winner of Friday night's WBF welterweight world title fight in Windhoek. The invitation for the Khomas Governor to reward the winner came from WBF title holder Betuel Tyson Ushona, who will defend his title against Russian challenger Roman Belaev. The decision to invite McLeod-Katjirua was further necessitated by the unavailability of Salute Boxing Academy's Patron Pendukeni Ivulula-Ithana, who will be out of town on national duty. The Governor assured Salute Boxing Academy officials of her presence on the night, while also warning Ushona not to let the nation down. “I will be there and remember I won't want to give the belt to your opponent but only to you. So please don’t disappoint us at all. Remember that I am saying this to you on behalf of the great Khomas region and the nation at large”, she said. Ushona promised a victory on the night, urging the public to come out in big numbers. “I know of the current economic conditions in the country and therefore those who will come to spend their money on the night will not be disappointed as I will put a huge smile on their faces”, Ushona said. The boxing bonanza's theme is Defending My National Pride under the ICT Ministry as conceived during a Cabinet retreat. Those behind the initiative were able to shed more light on their partnership with Salute Boxing Academy. Petrina Mathews from the Khomas Nationhood National Pride Campaign said their aim is to mobilise Namibians and address social ills such as tribalism, racism, vandalism, crime and gender violence and lack of respect towards national symbols. The event will feature eight bouts, with the main bouts to be broadcast live by the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation.
