The Debmarine Senior Regional Netball Championships took place over two days in Windhoek this weekend. The event saw Khomas Region taking the number one spot. After sometime of inactivity in netball due to a lack of funds, the championships finally took place, thanks to Debmarine coming to the aid of Netball Namibia. The event was played over two days in the capital, with finals being played yesterday. 14 regions were initially invited but only 10 ended up taking part. Erongo took on Omaheke in the first semi-final, with Erongo coming out victoriously by beating Omaheke 37-22. In the second semi-final, Otjozondjupa faced Khomas but the central region beat the eastern region 33-17. Omaheke beat Otjozondjupa with a point, with the final score being 15-14, earning them the 3rd place. It was time for the most anticipated game of the night, when Khomas and Erongo battled it out for the number one spot in the final. Khomas stood to the challenge and beat Erongo 41-29. Khomas women team's Captain Diana Tjejamba was delighted with their win and explained that the competition was not an easy one. Captain of Erongo Region, Michelle Erkana said they didn’t make it this year but hope to take the title next year. “We came with a game plan to come win, unfortunately there could only be one winner and it wasn’t us but we are still satisfied with second place. Second place is not bad,” she added. Public Relations Officer of Netball Namibia Rebekka /Goagoses applauded the regions for showing great resilience throughout the championships. “The two regions that stood out was undoubtedly Khomas and Erongo and then also to a certain extend Omaheke and Ojozondjupa region and finally, not to forget Kavango East, they were also very impressive,” /Goagoses said. Sports Commissioner Monica Shapwa said the sponsorship came at the right time and was grateful for Debmarine’s prompt response. Khomas walked away with 30 000Namibia dollars and gold medals. Erongo got 15 000 Namibia dollars and silver medals. Omaheke received 9000 Namibia dollars and bronze medals.
