Namibia's RWC dreams shattered by Typhoon

As Namibians were anticipating their country’s final match of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Typhoon Hagibis had other plans. While the Welwitschias have been working hard over the last four years in preparation for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and to finally try and secure that illusive World Cup win, the last thing they thought could ruin their fairytale moment, was a typhoon. Typhoon Hagibis, Japan’s biggest Typhoon in 60 years has claimed the lives of 23 people and injured more than a 100 people thus far, while the country plays host to the first-ever Asian Rugby World Cup. As Typhoon Hagibis drew ever closer to Japan, news broke on Friday morning that two games were cancelled due to the safety of the fans and players. The pool B game of New Zealand and Italy was cancelled alongside the European battle between France and England. There were talks of more games to be cancelled throughout the weekend - however things were still going on as planned. With Namibian fans and family excited about Namibia’s final clash against Canada on Sunday morning, news came through just before midnight on Saturday evening that the game was also cancelled. As fans were disappointed by the news, Head Coach Phil Davies went live on Facebook sharing the same sentiments. ” Well we are obviously disappointed with the cancelation but totally understanding that safety is paramount for the people who have to go to the stadium, the players the staff the officials and the supporters so it’s a logical decision. ” Davies said. With the cancelation of the game Namibia automatically got 2 points, as per the rules of the game. Due to this, Namibia ended fourth in Pool B a spot above Canada, making this Namibia’s best World Cup standing to date. The Welwitschias are expected to land at the Hosea Kutako international airport tomorrow at 13:20.
