Namibian para-athletes celebrated their official London send-off earlier today, but one of the team's stars was not present. The para-athletic team's send-off to the London Games was officiated in Windhoek, with Namibia Sports Commission Chief Administrator Freddie Mwiya; Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service deputy director of marginalised people and women in sport, Jo-Ann Manuel,FNB Namibia's Social Investment manager Revonia Kehivere as well as Namibia Paralympics Committee secretary-general Michael Hamukwaya all in attendance. At the event, FNB Namibia handed over a cheque of N$220 000 to help athletes make their trip a reality. Kehivere said they wanted to use the opportunity to sponsor the team as they always come back with medals. "As a bank we are proud to associate ourselves with Para-Athletics. We think our investment can go a long way in helping the athletes in making their dream a reality. N$220 000 might not be much but we hope it can help in any waypossible to make sure that the athletes go and perform to their maximum." She explained. During the event, it was also announced that due to injuries Johanna Benson sustained recently, she won’t be able to accompany the team. Benson, who is also known as Namibia's golden girl, will be missed at the event, which will be watched by sports fans across the world. Ananias Shikongo said the team will work hard and bring back medals nonetheless. "This is a great opportunity once again to go and make Namibia proud. I'm in good shape, been training hard and looking forward for the Championships." He explained. The athletes representing Namibia include Ananias Shikongo; Johannes Nambala; Lahja Ishitile and Aino Mushila.The team departed today to London, with the IPC London Championships set to run fron the 14th to the 23rd of July.
