Shikongo's Half - million includes Plot

Standard Bank Namibia's 500 000 Namibia dollar- sponsorship to Namibia's Paralympic Gold medalist Ananias Shikongo may provide him with a roof over his head, but not necessarily in a location of his choice. The para-athlete, who was honoured in the Achiever of the Year category at the Namibia Sports Awards last month, is currently living in a shack in the informal settlement of Goreangab Dam. Shikongo was presented with a 500 000-dollar sponsorship by Standard Bank towards the construction of his house at the annual DSN recognition event, which followed after the Namibia Sports Awards. The latest details of the sponsorship emerged after NBC Sport questioned whether the money would be for the construction of the house only or also include a plot. Head of Legal Governance Sigrid Tjijorokisa of Standard Bank confirmed telephonically that the sponsorship is inclusive of plot and construction. She said the bank is in search of a suitable plot and will approach the City of Windhoek in this regard. The sponsorship came through the Five Namibia dollar per brick project, which aims to mobilise the private sector and the public in raising funds required by the federation to build affordable housing units for disadvantaged Namibians. It is Shikongo's wish to be situated in a suburb close to the Independence stadium, which is the only stadium with a racing track. “They have to build the house next to the stadium or where they can find a stadium like where I can be able to train , very near side somewhere like Academia , Olympia as long as there is somewhere next to the track” said Shikongo He still added that he is not done with his career and that he has to go and retire in 2020. Construction of Shikongo's new house will start as soon as the Bank has secured a plot in Windhoek. City of Windhoek's Joshua Amukugo told NBC Sport that they have not received any communique from Standard Bank and thus could not comment.
