Windhoek-Sports Minister Erastus Uutoni launched the 2018 Namibia Annual Sport Awards at the Namibia Sports Commission in Windhoek on Tuesday. The fifteenth edition of the Namibia Annual Sport Awards carries the theme "ALL-STAR NIGHT DRIVEN BY THE PASSION TO WIN". Seventeen categories are included in this year's awards, with sponsors reportedly having pledged N$2,5 million for organization, logistics and prize money. The 2018 Sport Awards will be held at Swakopmund's popular Dome in the Erongo region on the 27th of October. This is the first time the Sports Awards are been held in another town since its inception - with Windhoek having being the only host previously. All nominees are required to have their own transport to and from Swakopmund, with the Namibian Sport Commission providing accommodation for two days for the nominees. During Tuesday's event a website, which can be accessed at www.namsportsawards.org , was also launched to enable visitors and administrators to relive past events and submit entries electronically for the first time. The applications are open and will close on the 8th September. Launching the event, Sport Minister Erastus Uutoni urged administrators to not do injustice to athletes who deserve to be nominated. “Sometimes there are things that are not pleasing. Colleagues who are responsible for identifying who performed very well sometimes, we are doing injustice to some of those kids, some of whom travel from far distances. A mother or father sacrifices some few cents to send his or her child to come and perform very well, but at the end of the day because you want Uutoni’s child to go you change the time ran by the child and you pull that child out. You disqualify that child, which a Namibian child. Is it because maybe you have a closer relationship with another person, maybe they are putting money in your pocket. It is not good and this is why we say let's step out corruption. Corruption is dangerous” Uutoni said. There are various categories and Board Chairman Joel Mathews has already called on other corporates to come on Board. Standard Bank also announced a whopping N$100 000 for the development programme of the year category. The Chairperson of the Awards Judging Panel, Lesley Tjiueza, elaborated on the five areas they consider when adjudicating. “When we are judging, we prominently look at five areas of performance and these five are: How did the athletes or the team do nationally, regional level and SADC Region 5 and Continental level and then we go Intercontinental ,that means your Commonwealth games and the last and the fifth stage is Globally” Tjiueza said. The event will be aired live on NBC TV and organizers have promised a line-up of Namibian entertainment from motivational speaker to artists. Tickets cost N$300 and are available at webticket.com.na
