Local authority leaders urged to avoid political affiliation

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Utoni, has urged local authority leaders to avoid political affiliation when carrying out their duties.

He made the call during a joint signing ceremony of the renewal and new cooperation agreements between the City of Windhoek and 16 other local authorities.

The areas of cooperation entail solid waste and sewerage management, human resources and capacity building, economic development, as well as land and housing.

Local Authority political office bearers receive allowance increases

Political office bearers serving in Part II municipalities, towns, and village councils will receive increases in their monthly allowances, which came into effect on the first of this month.

Councillors in municipalities will receive 10%, while those on town and village councils will receive 15% and 20%, respectively.

Councillors will also receive benefits such as airtime and sitting allowances.

nbc allocates equal free airtime to political parties contesting Keetmanshoop Rural by-election

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (nbc) has allocated free broadcasting airtime to political parties participating in the Keetmashoop Rural Constituency by-election slated for May 15.

This was revealed by the nbc’s Special Projects Manager during a consultation meeting with the political parties in Windhoek today (Thursday).

Kalilo Kalilo revealed that the broadcaster allocated 45 minutes of airtime that will be equally shared among the five political parties participating in the by-elections.

Protesters shift focus from societal to employment related matters

Namibians, particularly the youth have been embracing activism through public protests, against issues such as Gender-Based Violence.

Affected families and community members would protest at courts demanding that perpetrators not be granted bail.

But some activists have now shifted their protests towards employment-related matters including calls for equality, and social change.  
The action of using vigorous campaigning or causing disruptions is to bring about political or social change, at the national or community level.
