Political office bearers serving in Part II municipalities, towns, and village councils will receive increases in their monthly allowances, which came into effect on the first of this month.

Councillors in municipalities will receive 10%, while those on town and village councils will receive 15% and 20%, respectively.

Councillors will also receive benefits such as airtime and sitting allowances.

The approval by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, was announced by the Ministry's Executive Director, Daniel Nghidinua, through a circular issued this week.

According to the circular, the monthly allowances for Local Authority councillors are as follows: Part II Municipality Mayor receives N$8,550.50, Deputy Mayors receive N$7,790, and Chairpersons of the Management Committee receive N$8,033.50.

Ordinary Management Committee Members receive N$7,790, while ordinary Council Members get N$7,303.

As per the annual allowance adjustments, Town Council Mayors will earn N$7,750, while their deputy will pocket N$6,975.

The Chairperson of the Management Committee will receive N$7,233, while Management Committee members will earn N$6,717.

An ordinary council member had their monthly allowance adjusted to N$6,458.

A Chairperson serving on a Village Council will now receive a monthly allowance of N$4,765, while the Deputy Chairperson will pocket N$4,205, and the ordinary Village Council will receive N$3,640.

The allowance adjustments will also see councillors serving on Municipal and Town Councils pocket allowances of N$350 per sitting across the board, while those serving on Village Councils will receive N$200 per sitting.

The sitting allowance will be applicable for management committees and both ordinary and extra-ordinary sittings limited to one meeting per category per month, as well as special meetings limited to two sittings per month.

The purchase amount of a cell phone of N$4,000 for Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and Management Committee Chairpersons remains unchanged.

Monthly cell phone allowances for Part II Municipality and Town Council Mayors remain at N$1,000, while their deputies and the Management Committee Chairpersons also remain at N$600 and N$700, respectively.

Management Committee members will receive a monthly cell phone allowance of N$500, and an ordinary councillor will pocket N$300.

The Village Council Chairperson's monthly cell phone allowance of N$700 also remains unchanged, while ordinary village councillors will receive N$300.
