Local authorities in southern Africa struggle financially

Financial instability, compounded by low economic growth, is the biggest challenge facing municipalities in southern Africa. 

The South African Local Governance Association President, Stofile Bheke, said this while addressing attendees at the Local Economic Development Indaba held at Luderitz. 

The Association of Local Authorities in Namibia organised the four-day Indaba to examine and explore practical ways that local authorities can expand their revenue streams.

Local Authority political office bearers receive allowance increases

Political office bearers serving in Part II municipalities, towns, and village councils will receive increases in their monthly allowances, which came into effect on the first of this month.

Councillors in municipalities will receive 10%, while those on town and village councils will receive 15% and 20%, respectively.

Councillors will also receive benefits such as airtime and sitting allowances.
