NMP advised to be patient while waiting for ECC

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources and that of Economics and Public Administration have advised the Namibian Marine Phosphate Company to be patient while waiting for its Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC).
 
The company said it re-applied for the ECC last year and has not received any feedback yet from the Environmental Commissioner.

The Namibian Marine Phosphate (NMP) plans to start a seabed mining project in the country's ocean.

The proposed project is referred to as the Sandpiper Marine Phosphate Project.

Seal meat a potential delicacy

Fisheries biologist Lessyn Kalwenya believes seal meat has the potential to add to the list of local delicacies.

She says it will come with the added advantage of health benefits due to its oil being rich in Omega 3.

Kalwenya says seal meat will not only help feed thousands but can also help control and sustainably harvest the country's seal quota, which at the moment is underutilised.

Mafwe Traditional Authority unhappy with human-wildlife conflicts compensation policy

The Mafwe Traditional Authority in the Zambezi Region is not happy with the current compensation policy for losses incurred through human-wildlife conflicts.

Traditional councillors expressed their discontent during an engagement with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources.

Mafwe Traditional Authority councillors believe that the current compensation of N$100,000 for loss of life due to wildlife attacks is inadequate and instead want this amount to be increased to at least N$200,000 as a one-time payment.
