Shack dwellers receive homes at Nkurenkuru

At least 24 low-income earners at Nkurenkuru's Kakuro location in Kavango West Region received houses built under the Shack Dwellers Federation (SDFN).

The project began on December 1, 2021.

About 50 plots were allocated to the Shack Dwellers Federation in December 2021 by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni.

The houses are valued at close to N$42,000.

Of those 50 plots, 24 have so far been completed, with the remainder set for completion by the end of the year.

Oranjemund Town Council makes inroads housing provision

Concerted efforts from both the public and private sectors, as well as the community, are needed to address the housing shortage in the mining town of Oranjemund. 

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, commissioned the groundbreaking for the construction of 85 housing units. 

The groundbreaking ceremony coincided with the handover of 50 houses to the members of the Shack Dwellers Federation. 

The Oranjemund Town Council has also serviced 327 plots at Extension 10, of which 220 are designated for residential. 

Over 200 Ondangwa residents receive plots

Over 200 residents of Ondangwa have received plots to build their homes at Omashaka Proper Informal Settlement.

Out of the 231 plots, 37 were awarded through the Shack Dwellers Federation (SDF).

The plots have been serviced with water reticulation and electricity to the tune of N$4.3 million.

An additional N$1.1 million has been used to compensate nine households that paved the way for development.

Ondangwa Chief Executive Officer Ismael Namgongo wants to see an equal distribution of land among the residents.

23 SDF members receive houses in Divundu

In Divundu, in the Kavango East Region, 23 low-income earners formally got their homes, which were built by the Shack Dwellers Federation (SDF).

The houses were constructed at a cost of over N$955,000 on land provided for by the Divundu Village Council in 2018 through the Namibia Housing Action Group.

A member of the Shack Dwellers Federation, Fulgentia Mukendenge, says the initiative has impacted many lives.

Over 30 houses electrified with solar energy in Mondesa

Over 30 houses belonging to Shack Dwellers Federation members in Swakopmund's Mondesa suburb have been electrified with solar energy.

The houses were electrified through the Towards an Inclusive Design Renewable Energy Transition (TIDRET) project that is being implemented by the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF).


The Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) and Erongo Red signed a memorandum of understanding for the rollout of the project.

The TIDRET solar electrification project piloted in the Erongo Region is core-funded by the GIZ and the European Union.

Smooth sailing in electrification of 100 houses in Kalkfeld Settlement

Progress to electrify about 100 low-income houses built at Kalkfeld Settlement in Otjozondjupa Region is said to be going smoothly.

The Peri-Urban Electrification Project is valued at N$2 million and is being spearheaded by CENORED.


Speaking on the project's progress, Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor Marlayn Mbakera said infrastructure has been put in houses and streets, indicating the wait is finally over.

The houses to be electrified were built between 2015 and 2018.
