17 wildlife crime cases reported in two months

Namibia has reported 17 cases of wildlife crimes and 34 arrests during Operation Saving African Wildlife through Multilateral Assistance (SAMA), which was conducted between January and February.

Hosted by the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Customs Organisation (UNODC), Operation SAMA is the first Africa-focused initiative on wildlife trafficking.

Operation SAMA united 35 nations from East, West, Central, and Southern Africa in a concerted effort to combat the illicit wildlife trade. 

Central Namibia face water shortage

NamWater is calling on residents of central Namibia to use water sparingly as the area is facing a serious water shortage. 

Currently, the central area of Namibia gets its water supply from the Omatako, Von Bach, and Swakoppoort dams.

The dams water levels are said to be alarmingly low, at 18%, compared to 37.2% at the same time last year. 

The current 18% water level is equivalent to 27.8 million cubic metres. 

Albertina Haimbala to represent Namibia at Miss Earth 2024

The first runner-up of Miss Namibia 2023, Albertina Haimbala, will represent the country at the Miss Earth 2024 International Beauty Pageant instead of at the Miss World Beauty Festival. 

Normally, the first runner-up would attend the Miss World festival instead of Miss Namibia, however, the organisers of the event have decided otherwise.

The Miss Earth 2024 International Beauty Pageant will be held in Vietnam later this year.

This was announced by Miss Namibia Organisation's Chief Executive Officer, Umbi Karuaihe-Upi, today.

Namibia is working with its neighbours to provide a new gateway for modern trade and low-carbon industrial opportunities, placing Namibia and the region as frontrunners in the global green hydrogen economy.

Namibia plans to manufacture a dual-fuel green hydrogen train connecting 1,100 kilometres of rail to service 300 million Africans, not just the three million at home.

The Green Hydrogen Commissioner, James Mnyupe, who was speaking at Walvis Bay, says the rail connection will need a coordinated, integrated strategic business plan from Trans-Namib and Namport.

Namibia stands in solidarity with countries still fighting for their freedom

President Nangolo Mbumba says Namibia stands in solidarity with all those around the world still fighting for freedom, justice, and dignity, stressing that, as the country commemorates its own massacre at Cassinga on May 4, 1978, citizens remember the power of unity expressed in the face of oppression. 

The president noted the support of the Republics of Cuba, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania during Namibia's fight for liberation from oppression.

Omake raises N$20,000 for Safe Haven for vulnerable individuals

Otjiwarongo-based charity organisation Omake raised N$20,000 at a fundraising dinner in pledges towards the establishment of a safe place for vulnerable children and people with disabilities.

The construction of the centre is estimated to cost more than N$3 million.

The Omake Charity Organisation was founded in 2018 with the vision to establish a stay-in welfare and disability centre that will cater for more than 100 people and a soup kitchen to feed vulnerable children.

Prime Minister urges participation in Citizen Satisfaction Survey

Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has called on the public and institutions to cooperate with the government during the Citizen Satisfactory Survey aimed at improving public service delivery.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila indicated that the previous survey did not meet the expected targets for good performance.

Kuugonglewa-Amadhila states that the findings are an indication that more needs to be done to ensure that planned activities respond to the needs of communities and bring about the transformation needed in the country.
