16-year-old Kornelius Shimuafeni has been conferred the award of the Most Distinguished Order, third class, for saving the lives of nine-month-old twin babies from drowning.

The grade 7 learner was recognised for his exceptional courage, selfless action, compassion, leadership skills and his high level of responsibility to save lives.

The medal award was accompanied by two hundred thousand dollars.

On the 17th of May, Shimuafeni was herding livestock at Omutundungu village when he witnessed the babies allegedly being thrown into a water pond by their 24-year-old mother.

Without hesitation, the teenager jumped into the water and rescued both the children. 

His courageous action has now earned him national recognition.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who conferred him a national hero status, commended Shimuafeni's bravery, saying he ran on behalf of the country to save lives.

Shimuafeni is among Namibia's heroes and heroines, whose bravery and contributions have left a lasting mark on the country, including those who are no longer alive.
