Calls for the government to lift the moratorium on pilchards are getting louder, following reports of illegal pilchard fishing near Walvis Bay.

The calls are also based on surveys indicating that the pilchards' biomass has increased, showing signs of recovery over the past four years.

The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development will allocate N$75 million for land servicing and construction of houses at Farm 37, near Walvis Bay.

Farm 37, also known as Green Valley, is located about seven kilometres east of the harbour town.

The Walvis Bay Municipality said the Road Fund Administration has increased the budget for the road rehabilitation project to N$400 million.

Currently, the rehabilitation of two streets in the heavy industrial area is ongoing under the project.

Walvis Bay residents continue to volunteer for clean-up campaigns as a response to the waste crisis in the harbour town.

The Walvis Bay Rural Constituency Youth Forum organised the latest cleanup campaign at Kuisebmond.

A group of fishermen who camp at the Kuisebmond stadium has announced that more than 800 workers will not participate in a planned walking protest from Walvis Bay to Windhoek.

Richard Hoaeb, Chairperson of the Walvis Bay management committee, presented a combined Municipal Council Capital and Operating budget totaling 1.3 billion dollars for the 2025/2026 financial year.

Two councillors from the Walvis Bay Municipal Council have rejected the proposed N$1.3 billion budget, describing it as unrealistic and out of touch with residents’ needs.
