SADC region, despite peaceful outlook, faces security challenges

While the southern African region remains peaceful and stable, there are still security challenges in some parts of the SADC that require an effective response.

Promoting peace and security within the SADC region topped the agenda at the Extra Ordinary Troika Summit in Lusaka, Zambia.

Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was among the attendees.

The Troika took stock and tracked progress on the situation in the Cabo Delgado province of northern Mozambique as well as the northern Kivu province in eastern DRC, marred by instability over the years. 

FAO supports Namibia's food security efforts with N$2.2 million donation

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) remains a dedicated partner for Namibia to ensure food security for all.

This commitment was reaffirmed at the handover of gardening tools and irrigation systems to 308 beneficiaries in the Ohangwena Region, valued at N$2.2 million.

FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture are the implementers of the project funded by the government of Japan.

N$25 million will cover four focal regions, namely Ohagwena, ||Kharas, Kavango West, and Zambwezi, to tackle climate-induced shocks.

Otjozondjupa Health Directorate launches cholera awareness campaign

With an increase in cholera cases in some SADC countries, the Directorate of Health in the Otjozondjupa Region has launched an awareness campaign to educate communities about the disease.

The campaign targets schools, rural areas, and peri-urban areas identified as at-risk communities.

An environmental health practitioner in the Otjiwarongo District, Olivia Mbambi, said during a visit to Karundu Primary School that the awareness campaign is a proactive measure by the ministry to empower communities with knowledge about cholera.

SADC Council of Ministers to meet in Angola

The Council of Ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will meet on the 10th and 11th of this month in the Angolan capital city, Luanda.

Angola's Minister of External Relations, Téte António, will host the meeting in his capacity as the current Chairperson of the SADC Council of Ministers.

During the two days, the ministers will review and discuss the status of the implementation of Council and Summit decisions.

Similo made this remark during an update on the national broadcaster's readiness for the memorial and funeral services.

The Director-General says he has confidence in his teams and is positive that the national broadcaster will successfully cover the events.

SADC health ministers discuss efforts to control the spread of cholera

SADC ministers of health convened today in an extraordinary virtual council meeting to discuss coordinated efforts to prevent and control the spread of cholera across the region.

So far, five member states, including Zambia and Zimbabwe, have recorded cholera cases, which have led to hundreds of deaths.

The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, joined health ministers from 11 SADC member states in a meeting aimed at regional efforts to tackle the cholera outbreak in the region.

SADC expresses concern over ethnic tensions

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral  Observation Mission has lauded the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for its overall peaceful and calm conduct during the elections. 

However, the mission has also voiced concerns about escalating ethnic tensions in certain regions of the country.

Delays, logistical issues, and alleged fraudulent activities saw the DRC presidential and legislative elections extended for another day while some opposition parties called for a re-run.

SEOM launched to Kingdom of Eswatini

SADC has officially launched the electoral observation mission to the Kingdom of Eswatini and deployed observers to all regions.

Former Vice President of Zambia Enock P. Kavindele, who is leading the delegation as Head of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM), officially launched the mission for the deployment of observers to four regions of the kingdom.

SEOM will be observing the upcoming General Elections on September 29, 2023.
