Damara Cultural Festival boosts business owners at Okombahe

The 46th Annual Damara Cultural Festival has given business owners at Okombahe, a settlement in the Daures Constituency, a financial boost.

Due to an influx of cars and people, the gravel roads were watered to limit dust.

The usually quiet streets were populated by stalls stocked with food and other traditional products for sale.

Most of the ‡Nūkhoen who attended the 46th Damara Annual Cultural Festival at Okombahe have described the presence of President Hage Geingob at the event as notable.

For 46 years now, the Damara tribe has gathered at Okombahe Settlement to celebrate and preserve their cultural practices, music, and other heritage.

As per tradition, the 46th Damara Annual Cultural Festival kicked off at dawn when Gaob Justus llGaroeb lit the Ancestral Fire of Unity.

Revellers were thrilled when President Geingob, for the first time, attended in his capacity as head of state.

Mines Minister called to look into dealings of small-scale mines and license holders

Residents of Omatjete Settlement and surrounding villages in the Daures Constituency have joined in the fray to get the Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, to keenly look into dealings of small-scale mines and license holders.

At the community meeting with the minister, they argued that some mines are not only illegal but are also not assisting locals to benefit from the natural resources mined there.


The residents stressed how Chinese-owned mining companies mistreat locals despite the millions of dollars they are collecting in revenue.

Rain and strong wind blows off roofs of 12 houses at Okombahe

Rain accompanied by a strong wind has blown off the roofs of 12 houses at Okombahe in the Daures Constituency.

The storm also damaged several buildings and uprooted trees, including the famous Acacia, causing further damage to two cars.
 
Several electrical cables were pulled out, leaving the settlement without electricity for up to three hours.
 
A resident, Adolfine #Goses, narrates how she survived the storm while preparing a meal in the kitchen.
 
Her bedroom is left completely without a roof.

The Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development says over the past years, there has been a common agreement that young people do not value their cultures anymore, and it brings discomfort to know that they are slowly losing their identity.

Nathalia |Gȏagoses said this during the 45th Damara Annual Cultural Festival at Okombahe in the Erongo Region.

|Gȏagoses agrees with the sentiment that Africans or the black race have adopted cultures that are not their own and abandoned theirs.

The Damaran people gathered at Okombahe to celebrate the annual cultural festival, which is aimed at uniting the different Damara sub-tribes as well as showcasing their culture and traditions for the benefit of the youth.

As the ray of sunlight touched the face of the earth, the Damaran Gaob Justus |Uruhe ||Gäroeb performed a ritual ceremony upon his visit to the graveyard monument of the late leaders and unveiled new plaques in their honour.
 
The Damaran Gaob led the lighting of the ritual fire that represents unity among the 34 Damara clans.
