MPs discover that Salambala Conservancy employees have not received their salaries

The non-payment of conservancy employees' salaries is one of the similar concerns discovered by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources in many areas.

The committee, which visited Salambala Conservancy on Monday, was informed that employees have not received their salaries since February this year due to the absence of a management committee, which is supposed to sign off on various administrative issues.

Despite facing several challenges highlighted during recent oversight visits by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources to resettlement farms in the Otjozondjupa and Omaheke regions, one farmer stood out, thanks to his resilient approach.

Johannes Damaseb, an award-winning farmer at Okorusu farm in the Otjozondjupa Region, has demonstrated remarkable progress and has become an inspiration to fellow beneficiaries of the government's resettlement programme.

Johannes Damaseb currently employs over 10 permanent and 60 seasonal workers.

GBV victims report cases to traditional authorities instead of the police for compensation

Some victims of gender-based violence (GBV) have resorted to reporting cases to the traditional authorities instead of the police in order to get compensation.

This came to light during a meeting between the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Gender Equality, Social Development, and Family Affairs at Otjiwarongo.

Otjiwarongo has recorded 29 cases of rape and 98 domestic violence cases since last year.

Kukuri defends integrity of the judiciary

The Executive Director of the Judiciary, Bernhardt Kukuri has defended the integrity of the judiciary, stating that judges adhere to a strict code of conduct and maintain independence from any external influences.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia, ECN says political parties in parliament are still failing to account for money allocated to them by the state.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources is dismayed by the disparities in accommodation for Chinese nationals and Namibians who work at a lithium mine near Uis.

The committee is further concerned that there are no skills transfers happening because the Chinese nationals with qualifications, do not speak English. 

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources was informed by the management of the lithium mine, Longfire and Xingfeng Joint Venture, that critical skills are being transferred by the Chinese experts to Namibians. 

Resettled farmers in Otjozondjupa plead for support

Resettled farmers in the Otjozondjupa Region continue to face a number of obstacles that hinder agricultural activities.

This was revealed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources.

The visit was aimed at evaluating the productivity of resettlement farms, examining the role of resettlement farmers in job creation and food self-sufficiency, and assessing the government's terms of financing and training.

Stakeholders to be consulted on finding a solution to growing number of seal population

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources is expected to hold public consultations on the motion regarding the devastating effect of the growing seal population on the sustainability of fish stocks.

It is estimated there are roughly one million seals all along the Namibian coastline. 

The abundance of fish stock lures many seal colonies to breed in Namibian waters, which poses a threat to an ever-declining fish population.
