The Affirmative Repositioning (AR) Movement has announced 13 candidates to contest the local authority elections for the City of Windhoek. The AR candidates include student leaders, youth activists and young professionals such as lawyers, teachers and land surveyors. The movement’s candidates for the City of Windhoek are Dr Job Amupanda, IIlse Keister, Priscilla Heita, Maitjituavi Kavetu, Simon Amunime, Isdor Kamati, George Kambala, Dimbulukeni Nauyoma, Nasunga Lukubwe, Nathanael Kalola, Kenneth Namoloh, Abednego Shishiveni and Trudy Gertze. AR activist-in-chief, Amupanda at the occasion also launched the 'Windhoek Radical Transformation' plan. The document has five key pillars which outline AR's plans and objectives once it takes over control, and these include housing, job creation, development, de-coloniality, and happiness. In addition, the AR leader also promised to abolish "unnecessary tenders", reduce rates and taxes by 12%, establish western and southern industrial areas, research units, health centres, and annual sporting events. "The City has no enterprises of its own and relies 100% on service providers in the form of tenderers, even in areas where such services can be conducted in-house. Windhoek is a capitalist city, which housing is not seen as a shelter and essential right for residents but instead, it is seen as a commodity. It is for this reason that in 2014, Namibia recorded the highest housing price growth in the world, second to only Dubai," said Amupanda. A psycho-social support unit for victims of GBV is also on the priority list of the AR movement. The slow pace at which serviced land and housing are provided also raised concerns. "By 2041, Windhoek will have more than 800 000 inhabitants. The City presently have just over 300 000 inhabitants. More than 100 000 residents of the city reside in informal settlements. The City has dismally failed to address the urban land and housing question," said Amupanda. He also promised to remove all colonial statues and auction the mayoral chain.
