Cheap South African imports milk Namibian dairy producers dry

Milk producers in Namibia have again dropped prices, by 10% for this month and a further 10 cents at the end of next month. Cheap dairy imports are deflating milk and other diary prices across the country. The dairy producers said the situation in the Namibian dairy industry needs immediate and serious attention. A weekly release by the Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) expressed the alarm regarding the situation, noting that the latest price reduction is the second since last November. NAU and the Milk Producers Association say South African UHT milk sells at much lower prices than Namibia's bottled water, which could cripple the local dairy sector. Meanwhile, Namibia Dairies has warned producers not to increase milk production, amid fears the local market may not absorb excess milk. NAU called for the speedy tabling of a long-awaited bill to control import and export of dairy and dairy products, due to be tabled in Parliament later this year.
