COVID-19 response measures extended until 31 March

President Hage Geingob today announced that current COVID-19 response measures will be extended for another 36 days starting 25 February until 31 March 2021. Namibia has so far recorded 37 896 cumulative confirmed cases, with 2 058 active cases. Over the last 12 days, a rise in infections has been observed. Learners in schools and hostels have been the most affected population, with a 40% infection rate. So far, Namibia lost 411 lives due to COVID-19 and related illnesses. President Geingob said China announced it will donate 100 000 vaccine doses while the Indian government has pledged to donate 30 000 doses. Health Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula said Namibia has budgeted N$583 million for the vaccination rollout programme, including N$484 million for the actual procurement of doses to achieve a 60% coverage of the Namibian population. "Until a safe and effective vaccine becomes available in Namibia, these restrictions and continued public vigilance and diligence to the regulations, remains our only line of defence," said President Geingob.
