Education Ministry reiterates that it had no alternative but to decide on the rewriting of Grade 11, 12 examinations

Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture has reiterated that it had no alternative but to decide on the rewriting of Grade 11 and 12 examinations, because of stolen exam papers. Executive Director Sanet Steenkamp said if Grade 12 national examinations are not rewritten, the relevant certificates might lose international accreditation, which can affect further studies and employment opportunities for learners. In a media statement, Steenkamp said the conditions under which examinations must be administered, as well as the standards they must meet, are clearly set out in the accreditation agreement between the ministry and Cambridge International. But, the National Students Association claimed that the agreement does not require a rewrite in circumstances where stolen papers are nationally circulated. Steenkamp said the ministry's decision to rewrite the papers in the affected subjects will help ensure that examinations and certificates issued to candidates can be accredited by Cambridge International. The rewrite was ordered when national examination papers were leaked in the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary level old curriculum of Grade 12 and National Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary new curriculum of Grade 11 examination. The exams will be written in January and February.
