Erongo Governor Neville Andre believes there are opportunities in every crisis including the COVID-19 pandemic. The Governor, therefore, calls on local businesses to continue to innovate. "I would thus like to call on entrepreneurs to embrace the new normal and be innovative. The virtual space has now become our oasis for meetings for sharing information, for marketing and sending our products and services. Let's use the virtual world to the maximum to benefit our businesses and grow our economy and to step into the fourth industrial revolution era," said Andre. Businesses at Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, especially those in the tourism sector, have been brought to their knees by the COVID-19 pandemic. Those in the informal sector have not also been spared. Andre suggested that restaurants offer delivery services to attract customers during this time and ensure strict adherence to social distancing protocols, to help customers feel safe. He said, "we could use this time to have adequate packages for the local markets through providing customized packages for the local market for example pay for two nights and get one night free just to encourage, discount price to our local people. Packages tours to scenic and interesting sights, leasing out apartments during this period is another option for those in the hospitality industry. A six month contract would have gone a long way in helping out during this difficult time. It is done elsewhere and we can also do it in terms of thinking out of the box with innovation." The Governor is calling on municipalities to set up wireless networks to offer their residents access to the internet and allow businesses to innovate under the current restrictive business environment. Archie Benjamin, the chief executive officer of the Swakopmund Municipality said, "four companies have been putting up their fibre optic extensions around town. They have covered the central business disrict (CBD) and are now covering the western side of town. Next week we have a meeting with Paratus to see whether we can extend that fibre on the eastern side of town. The library and multi-purpose centre at Mondesa in Swakopmund offers research facilities and access to free wireless internet.
