Fishrot case transferred to High Court

Prosecutor General Martha Imalwa has succeeded in having the tax evasion case of the Fishrot accused transfered to the High Court for pre-trial. The Fishrot 6 appeared in the Windhoek Special Magistrate Court today. The Prosecutor General brought the application for the case to be transferred to the High Court. The case relates to charges of money laundering, Contravention of the Prevention of Organized Crime Act, corruption, conspiracy to commit corruption, fraud and tax evasion and obstructing the course of justice, among other charges. All these charges relate to a multi-billion-dollar fishing quota corruption scandal popularly known as "Fishrot". The PG also brought an application to have the case of Nigel van Wyk, who was arrested last year for allegedly trying to remove evidence against his boss, former Justice Minister Sacky Shanghala, also be prosecuted together with the Fishrot accused on the main charges. Imalwa also succeeded with this application, despite protest by his lawyers that he be charged only with the obstruction of justice. Their case will now be heard on the 22nd of April in the High Court. All accused remain in custody.
