Kavango East records successes in fighting HIV and AIDS

A senior medical officer in the Kavango East Region says that they have recorded successes in fighting HIV and AIDS over the past few years. Nyangana District Hospital Senior Medical Officer, Eric Sidile, says the Kavango East Region has reached 90% suppression of HIV and 99% retention of people on antiretroviral treatment (ART). Dr Sidile says the introduction of health extension services and total control epidemic (TCE) progammes in remote areas have supported the successes. The senior medical officer has urged residents to continue practicing prevention measures and taking ART drugs correctly. Around 2 500 patients on ART therapy in his district are adhering to the treatment. Dr Sidile says only 77 of 4 300 people have tested for HIV in the Nyangana District this year. Activist Elizabeth Kupembona, who has been living with HIV for 17 years, says people should know their statuses, even as she warns that stigmatization is still rife. She says stakeholders should ensure HIV positive patients eat nutritious food and get equal employment and business opportunities. They were speaking at the recent celebration of World Aids Day held at Ndiyona settlement in Kavango East Region.
