LPO assures Namibian livestock producers will do everything to keep the country free from FMD

Livestock Producers' Organisation (LPO) says Namibian livestock producers will do everything in their power to keep the country free from Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). This was said in a media statement by LPO following concerns expressed by the United States Cattlemen Association (USCA) about FMD detected in Namibia. USCA fears for possible FMD contamination from Africa, especially Namibia. Namibia is the only African country exporting its beef to the United States of America. LPO Chairperson, Martinus Pretorius, argued that Namibia has a disease-free, highly regulated and individually traceable livestock system, which it has maintained for about 60 years. Pretorius warned that if the FMD spread to the southern parts of the Veterinary Cordon Fence, it will spell disaster to the country's meat industry and affect the livelihoods of more than 70% of Namibians. Pretorius appealed to meat producers worldwide to support Namibia in its efforts to keep the protect the disease-free zone for the country to keep producing the best free-range, grass-fed and hormone-free meat.
