Meatco says trading Partners have no reason for concern

Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) says there should be no reason for the US or any other trading partner to be concerned about the quality of Namibian beef. Two weeks ago, American farmers reportedly called on the US government to boycott importing meat products from Namibia, over concerns of a foot and mouth outbreak north of Namibia's veterinary cordon fence. Meatco's senior manager for quality assurance, health and safety Dr Adrianatus Maseke, however, says the outbreak is being contained, north of the redline, hence it can not be true to say that the cordon fence has failed and threatened the area south for beef export. Maseke says, in fact, the interventions to contain the disease such as movement controls and vaccination has proven successful with no more new sites for the outbreak. The process to declare the outbreak as over, Dr Maseka says is at an advanced stage. With regards to the Cattle Association of America's concern, Dr Maseke says Meatco has not received direct communication from them but learned of such concerns from the media. That as it may be, he says Meatco has a robust tracing system for any client who wants to satisfy themselves with the health condition of the meat product. Meatco, Dr Maseke says is confident that the corporation has not lost its clients in the name of the said outbreak.
