The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources says when appointed to the portfolio, he found an industry that was plagued by retrenchments as well as legal and administrative loopholes. It was an industry in which the people of Namibia had no trust, and therefore it was decided to first engage all stakeholders to clean up the industry. Dr Albert Kawana explained that there are over 5 000 applications, including those whose rights had expired. He was speaking during an update at the Covid-19 Communication Centre following reports that the Government has renewed all old fishing right holders at the expense of the new applicants.
