The Namibian Public Workers Union, NAPWU, and the Namibian National Teachers Union, NANTU, officially announced that the civil servants' strike will take place. At a joined media conference by the two bargaining unions, NAPWU GS Petrus Nevonga revealed that out of 81 853 public servants, 43 794 took part in the countrywide polls, which represents 53.5% of the total eligible voters. 346 ballots were rejected or spoiled leaving 43 448 votes to be counted. 42 216 or 96.4% votes were in favour of the strike, while 1 832 or 2.9% were against. Nevonga told the media conference that what is left now is for the two unions to sit with the Government to draw up the strike rules starting Wednesday. Upon agreeing on the rules, the unions will then give the government 48 hours notice before the industrial action could commence. He, however, indicated negotiations will in the meantime continue with the ]Government to see if an agreement will be reached before the strike day. He stated that due to some disagreements between the two parties, unions and the Government, the arbitrator has already drawn up some rules on the strike and the two parties need to deliberate on these rules.
