Ndeitunga says alcohol consumption a cause for concern

Police Inspector General Sebastian Ndeitunga said alcohol consumption among Namibians during the state of emergency is a cause for concern. Lieutenant General Ndeitunga says it is frightening to see the overcrowdedness at alcohol outlets and urged bar owners to respect the prescribed opening and closing hours. Ndeitunga called on police officers and security agencies to enforce the laws and ensure that all bars and shebeens close and open as directed. He said, “it's a worrisome situation as people are still going on the normal spree the whole night and police are under serious instructions to patrol at night and make sure that they close all the bars that are open and enforce the regulations to the extent that the penalties to those who are selling alcohol in contravention of the state of emergency.” He urged Namibians to drink responsible, saying alcohol contribute little or nothing to the development of the country. Ndeitunga says alcohol depletes people's budgets and drive them to cash loans and it contributes to careless attitude and reckless driving among others. On Friday a driver who was under the influence of alcohol swerved from his lane and bumped Ndeitunga's official vehicle. “Lucky enough my driver was not injured but the drunk one was injured and was evacuated to Onandjokwe Hospital. That is the effect of alcohol that we are talking about. These two cars could have rolled down from the bridge and could have caused more damage not only to the vehicles but also to the drivers,” said Ndeitunga.
