Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs conducts public hearing on the Bwabwata National Park

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs is conducting a public hearing on the Bwabwata National Park. The hearing follows a petition to parliament from the Hambukushu Traditional Authority, asking for the proclamation of the Bwabwata as a National Park to be reviewed. The Hambukushu have raised other issues such as their land area being small and as a result, they are unable to maintain their expected livelihoods as per their customs. They also accused the Ministry of Environment of fencing off communal land, while not allowing surrounding farmers to graze their cattle in the park. The ministry, on the other hand, is denying all allegations, saying everything was done in consultation with the community and traditional authorities. The ministry is also of the view that the community is not benefiting from conservancies and tourism and hospitality industries around the park because the community and traditional authorities are not forthcoming in setting up proper beneficiation structures.
