The Press Secretary in the Office of the President has described the planned demonstrations against the killing of four fishermen by the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) as senseless, describing such actions as politically motivated. The planned demonstrations at the Botswana High Commission in Windhoek, and at Katima Mulilo, Dr Alfredo Hengari says, are blatantly politicised and will at best only serve as unwelcome distractions. Dr Hengari says a petition against the BDF on Namibian soil is unnecessary, as the President is already seized with the matter and has communicated the gravity of the matter to his Botswana counterpart, Mokgweetsi Masisi. President Hage Geingob, he says, met with family members of the deceased, where he expressed his condolences and listened to their requests. The Prime Minister has been asked to favourably consider the request of the family to be assisted with the burial of their loved ones. Dr Hengari says the family should be allowed to mourn without what he termed "unwarranted politicisation of the incident". President Hage Geingob, he says, has put together a high-level ministerial delegation to ensure that the investigation into the death of the four men is carried out in the shortest possible time and in the most transparent manner.
