President Hage Geingob today announced, based on key indicators, reduced restrictions for Namibia except for Walvis Bay. At 23h55, on Monday 1 June, except Walvis Bay, Namibia will transit from Stage 2 to Stage 3, for 28 days. Walvis Bay will revert to Stage 1 for seven days. This is needed to ascertain the level of spread of COVID-19 and help with tracing of contacts of the positive cases. Churches will be able to gather 50 people at a time. President Geingob said relaxing restrictions does not imply the disappearance of COVID-19. The public is urged to not become complacent but to comply with regulations to safeguard the health of the nation. Minister of Health, Dr Kalumbi Shangula said the public should continue social distancing, wear face masks and increase handwashing and sanitising of public and shared facilities. Anyone with symptoms should call the till free numbers. Businesses are required to keep a register of clients. Schools will resume with a phased return with daily screening. Alcohol business may operate between 12h00 to 18h00 and no sales of alcohol on Sundays. Alcohol will only be sold for takeaways. The lifting of these restrictions come 76 days after the announcement of the lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19. Public events and spaces are allowed to open under strict regulations while nightclubs and gambling houses are not allowed to open yet as they are deemed high-risk areas. Namibia has 22 positive cases, 14 recoveries and eight active cases.
