Public Enterprise Minister stresses that Namibian SOEs should comply with corporate governance

Minister of Public Enterprise Leon Jooste has revealed that Namibian state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are not doing well in terms of complying with corporate governance. Jooste said the overall compliance for SOEs' governance agreement stands at 35%, performance agreement at 34%, while the Interpreted Strategic Business Plan stands at 29% and Annual reports also at 29%. He stressed that SOEs should take the compliance of corporate governance very seriously as it makes them more transparent and accountable to the shareholders, investors and stakeholders. He also revealed that currently, the SOEs' total assets stand at N$118.5 billion, total liabilities at N$60 billion, bringing the net value assets at N$59.3 billion. He explained that if the SOEs' assets and liabilities are compared to the actual value of the country's entire economy on GDP, it takes a big amount of it. Hence it is vital that SOEs think strategically when it comes to the value and quality of the product and services they deliver in growing the country's economy while reducing inequity and unemployment. The minister also noted that his ministry is advocating for the cabinet to consider CEOs to serve on other entities' boards as long as these boards are non-related to the entities they operate within.
