Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday became the new president of the African National Conference. South Africa’s ruling party held its 54th conference at Nasrec, south of Johannesburg, where 4 708 delegates cast their ballots for the top leadership of the party. Ramaphosa, the country’s deputy president, beat Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, former African Union chair, by 2 440 to 2 261 to head Africa’s oldest liberation movement. Ramaphosa received 1 469 branch nominations while Dlamini-Zuma received 1 094 nominations. He takes over from Jacob Zuma who was president of the party for 10 years.
