A water reticulation project at Mururani village has reduced the distance to collect water for many households.

The project is spearheaded by the Kavango West Regional Council through the Mankumpi Constituency office.

The project, which started last year with material support from the Councillor's Office, connected about five water taps from a local borehole to selected water points.

Previously some residents would walk two to three kilometers to fetch water from the borehole drilled by the rural water supply.

The beneficiaries carried out the work themselves, from digging the trenches to covering them after the pipes were installed.

Chairperson of the Village Development Council Johannes Mukuve gave an overview of the project.

“We received sponsorship from the Councillor's office, which provided us with materials, including pipes and other equipment needed to connect the water supply. We managed to connect water from our boreholes to the nearest designated water points, making water accessible in those areas. As a result, some taps—especially those in the central area—are now running. However, we still face challenges at the water points located at the end of the pipeline, where the water supply has not yet reached.”

Of the connected points, three are currently operational, while the other two are not receiving water due to low pressure from the water tank.

Apart from low water pressure, the villagers only have water from ten o'clock in the morning until four in the afternoon.

Community leaders have raised concerns about the water pressure and limited coverage with Rural Water Supply officials, seeking advice on how to improve the water supply and pressure.

A request has also been made to the Councillor's office to extend the network to serve households that are still far from the nearest borehole.

Mukuve emphasised that the call is not limited, and good Samaritans are welcome to assist the community on the water excavation project.
