A number of houses, properties and a school in Rundu were damaged by heavy rains this week. Over the past few days, Rundu received heavy rains leaving some families in areas such as Ndama and Sauyemwa destitute after their houses were flooded and damaged. Some shacks were completely destroyed and others washed away. Furniture, cement, national documents and boundary walls of some houses were also damaged in the process. A resident said, "it started in the evening with heavy winds and showers, then we just heard a loud sound like a gunshot. My children were terrified and the next thing the zinc fell off. I was home with my children and my husband and we decided to call the neighbours. That's when it also started raining. I couldn't safe all our national documents not even my ID only two birth certificates for two of my kids. The affected families are homeless and in need of assistance to rebuild their houses. In Rundu Rural Constituency, a block of three classrooms at Uvhungu Vhungu Combined School, its cooking area as well as an MTC tower have been damaged. The classroom block accommodates 120 learners and the school principal said the education director's office in the region has already been informed about the incident. Vaino Peter, the principal of Uvhungu Vhungu Combined School said, "the class can no longer be used for learning and teaching. The school is going to open on 11 January, and this will seriously affect the education process in terms of accommodation and we do not have classes to accommodate these learners."
