Social workers provide psychosocial support to the homeless during COVID-19

During the panel discussion at the COVID-19 Communication Centre, Ministry of Health and Social Services' Chief Social Worker, Tuhafeni Talia and Christa Hansen, a social worker at the ministry, said they responded to the directive by the President to remove all people without shelter from the street. They were moved to Khomasdal Sports Stadium and Katutura Youth Centre. They said this was a holistic approach, they educate them on COVID-19, give them psychosocial support, health, mental, educational, therapeutic and spiritual counselling. They said, in the beginning, it was stressful for everyone, as they had to adapt to the situation. They also receive health and mental check-ups at the centre. They, however, cited few challenges, including misunderstandings due to cultural differences and anger management as well as substance abuse issues, were experienced but the social workers have been able to bring the situation under control. They also mentioned that there is a needs assessment tool to help them identify their needs and challenges, as they are challenged by the need for basic services. They appealed for donations to help them tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.
