SUN calls for reintroduction of the Education Support Programme

The Students Union of Namibia (SUN) has called on the Government to reintroduce the Education Support Programme for children of marginalised communities. During a media briefing in Windhoek today, SUN president Kanepolo Amunime said, since its introduction in 2005, the programme assisted many learners of the Ovatwe, Ovatjimba and San communities. Amunime said money from this programme helped with accommodation and transport fees as well as toiletries but complained that this support has been reducing to nothing in recent years. He claimed that as a result, these learners have been finding it difficult to access schools as they are also going to schools on empty stomachs. This has forced many children from the marginalised communities to drop out of schools, Amunine says. The SUN president said that this compromised the future and human development of the marginalised communities. The students' movement, therefore, appealed to the Office of the Vice-President, under who this programme resorts, to bring back this support initiative to learners from these communities. SUN leadership gave an ultimatum of one week for the VP's office to address this or else they will take unspecified action to ensure its reintroduction.
