Three die in drowning incidents in Omusati

Omusati Police are investigating two separate incidents of drowning which led to the loss of three lives. It is alleged that on Thursday at about 15h00 at Ovenduka cattle post, in the Uuvudhiya Constituency, three men took cattle to a half-closed traditional water well. It is believed that the deceased went into the well to start a power generator fixed on the stairs inside the well which is used to pump water from the well. Instead of coming out after starting the generator, he allegedly insisted on remaining inside while the generator is pumping. Further information indicates that after giving the cattle water, the deceased lost energy possibly due to lack of oxygen thereby subsequently fell from the stairs into the water and drowned. Attempts to retrieve the body by bystanders proved futile. The deceased’s body was only retrieved from the well on Friday with the help of divers. The deceased has been identified as 57-year-old Lazarus Shilongo from Ekamba village and his next of kin have been informed. The second person who attempted to rescue the deceased collapsed inside as well and was rescued alive. He was rushed to Onkani Clinic, thereafter transferred to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital where his condition is described to be stable. In a separate incident, children drowned after they allegedly fell in the water when they were busy herding cattle on Friday at Okapuku Village in the Elim Constituency. Preliminary investigations indicate that another child who was with the two deceased ran back home to inform the parents who upon arrival only retrieved two lifeless bodies from the water. Police say the exact circumstances which caused the children to fall into the water is still being probed. The two deceased seven-year-olds have been identified as Andreas Bernard and Grugord Mandume, both from Okapuku Village and their next of kin have been informed. Police investigations in both matters continue.
