Two thousand people to be tested for COVID-19 in Walvis Bay

Two thousand people will be targeted in the Walvis Bay Local Authority area for COVID-19 testing between 24 June and 28 June. This will be part of the Active Case Identification Exercise launched by the Erongo Governor Neville Andre and other stakeholders. Andre told reporters at Swakopmund that the Erongo Region is faced with a mammoth task of ensuring that the virus is contained and one of the methods is to embark on mass testing. The Governor noted that the investigation will target locations with high populations, vulnerable persons who interact with many persons from the community as they conduct their daily jobs and offer essential services. These will include health care workers in health facilities, pharmacies, cashiers, tellers, receptionists, security guards, cleaners, security clusters, shops, supermarkets, banks, barbershops and salons, car wash, vendors, drivers, ship operators or staff, operational factories providing essential services and journalists. The World Health Organisation Surveillance Officer Hilary Njenge supported the Governor and said the faster the extent of infection is known, the faster the government is able to gather resources to respond to the situation. Njenga stressed that it is not a matter of testing the people and putting them in isolation or quarantine but rather to know what the problem is, where it is and how fast to respond to it. The targeted areas where tests will be done are at Kuisebmond Seapoint location from 24 until 25 June at the Kuisebmond Health Centre. Namport location will have a mobile team and the coastal clinic will be doing tests from 24 until 25 June. Tutaleni and Twaloloka in Walvis Bay will have tests done from 24 and 25 June at !Nara Primary School and Coastal clinic. Those in Kuisebmond's Kabeljou Street and Narraville residential area will be accommodated between 26 and 27 June at Narraville Community Hall while the Kuisebmond centre will cater to participants at the Kuisebmond Community Hall. Namport and those living in town will be accommodated on 26 until 27 June by mobile teams while those at the Walvis Bay Correctional Facility will be tested between 23 and 27 June. Utuseb, about 69 kilometres from Walvis Bay, will also be accommodated on 27 June. The tests are voluntary.
