Namibian meat lovers now have access to some of the best meat on the market, with Wagyu beef hitting the local market. Originally from Japan, this brand of beef can now be found in Namibia with local farmers already breeding this type of cattle, known as Wagyu. And though the physical appearance looks no different from normal cattle such as the African Nguni, except that they are not multi-coloured.
The taste that lies underneath the skin is absolutely mouth-watering for beef lovers. One of the local Wagyu breeders and farmers is Deja Nienaber, who says she started farming the Wagyu cattle in 2018. Nienaber started by importing embryos, semen and sperm cells of the Wagyu from Japan and inseminated them into surrogate cattle in South Africa which produced the best Wagyu calves. These were then brought into Namibia where she is currently farming as a Wagyu stud breeder.
So far, available scientific information put Wagyu as healthy meat with unsaturated fat, provided it is taken in the right amount and free of some of the common diseases derived from normal beef products. Cooking styles will depend on the chef of the day but it's quite tender.
