The Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to a 67-year-old man accused of raping his 13-year-old granddaughter. The man appeared before Magistrate John Sindano in what was his first court appearance. Prosecutor Fidel Wakudumo opposed bail as he said investigations are still in the preliminary stages and that it would be against the public interest to grant bail. “We also fear that the accused might interfere with the case as he and the victim live in the same house,” Wakudumo added. The accused, who is represented by private lawyer Ray Rukoro, reportedly sexually assaulted the victim on numerous occasions between March and November this year. The case was postponed to 3 February 2021. Rukoro, who did not oppose the postponement, said they will, however, make the necessary arrangements for a formal bail hearing for his client as advised by the court.
