Walvis Bay truck port no longer sustainable

The temporary truck port meant to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 at Walvis Bay is no longer sustainable. The Walvis Bay Corridor Group Wellness Services manager said that this is due to support from donors declining over the past months. Edward Shivute called on stakeholders in the transport industry to mobilise resources to save the facility. Shivute stressed that the port is still relevant as a new Covid-19 variant has been detected in South Africa. While potential donors mull over funding the truck port, the Walvis Bay Corridor Group will continue educating the drivers about coronavirus. Shivute has described the education campaign a success as it has changed the mindset of truck drivers. The facility set up in May last year serves as a quarantine or isolation facility for truck drivers to contain the spread of COVID-19.
